Southern Spoon Bread

2-1/2 cups water
1/2 cup butter
1/4 cup sugar
1 tsp. salt
1-1/2 cups yellow corn meal
1-1/2 cups milk
6 large eggs
1-1/2 tsp. baking powder

Preheat oven to 350°F. Butter and flour a 13x9-inch baking pan. Heat water, butter, sugar, and salt to boiling in large saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in cornmeal and cook, stirring constantly, until mixture is thickened, about 2 minutes. Remove from heat and place in large bowl. Whisk in milk until smooth. Add eggs, then baking powder, and mix well. Pour into prepared pan. Bake 35-40 minutes, until puffed and golden brown. Serve warm. Makes 12 servings.
