5 cups flour 1 tsp. soda 3 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. salt 3 tbsp. sugar 1 cup solid shortening 1 pkg. dry yeast 2 tbsp. warm water 2 cup buttermilk Melted butter Mix flour, soda, baking powder, salt and sugar; cut in shortening. Dissolve yeast in warm water; stir into buttermilk. Add to dry ingredients; mix lightly. Turn dough onto floured surface; shape into smooth ball with hands. Roll out to thin rectangle; fold in half and roll again lightly. Cut with biscuit cutter; place biscuits in greased pan. Brush tops with melted butter; let rise until light. Bake in preheated 450 degree oven for 12 to 15 minutes. Dough will keep for several days in refrigerator. |
